Tor is a shorthand for The Onion Router (hence the logo) and was initially a worldwide network of servers developed by the U.S. Navy. Tor enables people to browse the internet anonymously because it is built on hardened security features, including changing your IP address dynamically every few seconds. Tor, is currently a non-profit organization whose main purpose is the research and development of online privacy tools.

The Tor software protects you by making you a highly secure anonymous Internet user by hiding your identity over communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world. It prevents someone trying to monitor you over Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning and revealing your physical location, and it lets you access Deep Web sites which are blocked.

With Tor browser you can visit/access TOR hidden sites such as .onion, .bit sites which are only a tiny part of the Deep Web (see also Dark Web). Deep Web is simply a collection of websites that cannot be indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, and so on. Deep Web accounts for almost 99% of the connected webs, while the normal web that we use daily, known as Surface Web is only 1%. Using Tor browser requires you to take some safety precautions. For various os distributions, you can install Tor browser from Anonymity Site.

"Short Bytes: The TOR Project is working closely with security researchers to implement a new technique to secure the TOR Browser against the FBI’s de-anonymization exploits. Called “Selfrando”, this technique will fight the FBI’s “Code Reuse” exploits and create a “hardened” version of TOR." Read more

Installing Tor Browser via torbrowser-launcher

This is the easiest way to install the Tor Browser on Ubuntu Linux -- by using the Tor Browser Launcher script. The script will download and automatically install the most recent version of Tor Browser and add application launcher icon.

Although the Tor browser launcher package is included in the default Ubuntu repositories, in most cases it will be outdated. To get the most up-to-date version, we will install the package from the project maintainer's GitHub repository as follows:

Add the Tor Browser Launcher PPA repository using the following command:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:micahflee/ppa

Update the apt package list and install the Tor Browser Launcher package:

  1. sudo apt update
  2. sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher

You can then start the Tor Browser Launcher either from the command line by typing,

  1. torbrowser-launcher

or launch it from the start menu by searching (within the Activities/Applications menu) for Tor Browser.

When you start the "torbrowser-launcher" for the first time, it will download the Tor Browser and all its dependencies.
