Tor is a shorthand for The Onion Router (hence the logo), a free software that provides anonymity online and was initially a worldwide network of servers developed by the U.S. Navy. Tor is now maintained by the Tor Project, a non-profit organization. Tor enables people to browse the internet anonymously because it is built on hardened security features, including changing ones IP address dynamically every few seconds. Tor main purpose is the research and development of online privacy tools.

Tor works by encrypting your traffic and routing it through a network of volunteer-run servers called relays. This makes it difficult for anyone to track your online identity and activities, as your IP address is changed frequently. Tor prevents someone trying to monitor you over Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and prevents the sites you visit from learning and revealing your physical location.

Tor is often associated with the dark web, but it is important to note that the two are not the same. The dark web is a hidden part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, and so on. It is accessible through special software like Tor. While the dark web can be used for illegal activities, it is also used for legitimate purposes, such as whistleblowing and accessing censored content.

Deep Web vs Dark Web

The deep web is much larger than the surface web, which is the part of the internet that is accessible through search engines. The deep web includes websites that are not indexed by search engines, such as databases, private forums, and membership-only websites. The dark web is a subset of the deep web that is intentionally hidden from search engines. It is accessible through special software like Tor.

The dark web is often associated with illegal activities, but it is important to note that it is also used for legitimate purposes. For example, journalists and activists may use the dark web to communicate with sources and access censored content.

In conclusion, the deep web encompasses all hidden content on the internet accessible with specialized software, including the dark web. The dark web, is a secretive realm within the deep web, which remains largely unknown and inaccessible to the majority of internet users.

Using Tor

With Tor browser you can access sites such as .onion and .bit which are only a tiny part of the Deep Web (see also Dark Web). Deep Web accounts for almost 99% of the connected webs, while the normal web that we use daily, known as Surface Web is only 1%.

Using Tor can help you to protect your privacy online, but it is important to take some safety precautions. These include:
  • Using a strong password and two-factor authentication.
  • Keeping your Tor software up to date.
  • Only accessing reputable websites.
  • Being aware of phishing scams.
  • Using a VPN in conjunction with Tor.

"Short Bytes: The TOR Project is working closely with security researchers to implement a new technique to secure the TOR Browser against the FBI’s de-anonymization exploits. Called “Selfrando”, this technique will fight the FBI’s “Code Reuse” exploits and create a “hardened” version of TOR." Read more

Installing Tor Browser via torbrowser-launcher

This is the easiest way to install the Tor Browser on Ubuntu Linux -- by using the Tor Browser Launcher script. The script will download and automatically install the most recent version of Tor Browser and add application launcher icon.

Although the Tor browser launcher package is included in the default Ubuntu repositories, in most cases it will be outdated. To get the most up-to-date version, we will install the package from the project maintainer's GitHub repository as follows:

Add the Tor Browser Launcher PPA repository using the following command:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:micahflee/ppa

Update the apt package list and install the Tor Browser Launcher package:

  1. sudo apt update
  2. sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher

You can then start the Tor Browser Launcher either from the command line by typing,

  1. torbrowser-launcher

or launch it from the start menu by searching (within the Activities/Applications menu) for Tor Browser.

When you start the "torbrowser-launcher" for the first time, it will download the Tor Browser and all its dependencies.
