HTML is a software stack that stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, and is the standard markup language for creating web pages. The major function of HTML is to describe the structure of a web page, by defining the properties and behaviors of its content based on the implementation of a markup pattern to it.

HTML has been evolving and undergoing upgrades since its creation, and the latest release of HTML is HTML5 developed by WHATWG community. This latest version is the fifth generation of HTML and subsumes XHTML, in its history. The term HTML5 is two-fold: firstly, it is a modern version of the standard HTML stack, with new elements, attributes, and behaviors, and secondly, it comes with a larger set of technologies that gives it more capabilities to build diverse and robust web sites and applications. HTML is usually assisted by technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and scripting languages, JavaScript being the most popular.
