The Illustris TNG project is a series of mission critical large-scale, cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation that illuminate the physical processes driving galaxy formation. The simulations use a state of the art numerical code which includes a comprehensive physical model and runs on some of the largest supercomputers in the world.

Below is an Illustris TNG time evolution of the inside of a 10 Mpc (comoving) region from the start to z=0. (01:45) simulation for the interstellar magnetic field strength: blue/purple shows regions of low magnetic energy arranged along filaments of the cosmic web, orange and white show regions with significant magnetic energy inside halos and galaxies.

Illustris TNG project is led by Volker Springel at HITS, in collaboration with researchers at MPIA, MPA, Harvard, MIT, and CCA, namely; TNG Collaboration.
