Adobe has stopped supporting Adobe Reader for Ubuntu Linux since Precise Pangolin (Ubuntu 12.04). If you really need Adobe Reader to open some pdf files, such as forms which only need it to open them, you can execute the commands below in the Terminal with some significant degree of risk (the package is old and no longer supported, which means may break your system or cause security vulnerability):

  1. sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt install adobereader-enu

After properly installing Adobe Reader, then remove the Canonical Partners repository for Precise:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository -r "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"
  2. sudo apt-get update

The best options are to install VirtualBox, Wine, or PlayOnLinux, and then install Adobe Reader on top of them.
