Opening for a PhD position in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics in Edinburgh

The Mathematical Physics group (http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/school-of-mat ... earch/empg) at the School of Mathematics of the University of Edinburgh has an opening for a PhD position within the area of string theory and the AdS/CFT correspondence.

The group is embedded within the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, a joint research institute made up of the School of Mathematics of the University of Edinburgh and the department of Mathematics of Heriot-Watt University. In this context the group is part of the Edinburgh Mathematical Physics Group (https://empg.maths.ed.ac.uk). Finally, the group is also part of the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics (https://higgs.ph.ed.ac.uk).

The position is for 4 years, starting this Fall and is funded by the Royal Society. The funding covers University fees and a monthly stipend.

8 Funded Positions for PhD studies in Computer Science

The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), based in l’Aquila, Italy, has just issued a call for eight four-year PhD positions in Computer Science. The yearly amount of the scholarship is of € 16,159.91 gross. (An additional 50% on monthly basis may be awarded for research period aboard if approved by the GSSI.) In addition, the following facilities and benefits apply:

• all PhD students will have free accommodation at the GSSI guest house and, starting from the second year, another accommodation or a financial substitute of 350,00 Euros gross/month (to obtain the contribution, the students would have to present a rental agreement in L’Aquila);

• all PhD students will have free luncheon vouchers (1 per day, working days, except school closures, missions, other situations contemplated by the GSSI rules)

• all PhD students will have tuition fees waived;

• all PhD students will be covered by insurance against any accident and/or injury that may occur while carrying out their PhD activities.

PhD Position in Probability Theory at Strasbourg

One PhD contract in probability theory is offered at the University of Strasbourg (in Strasbourg, France). The three year long position is intended for an international (non-French) student, and is funded by a prestigeous IdEx (Initiative d'Excellence) grant.

Research activities are meant to start in Fall 2018 term. They will be focusing on stochastic coalescence, and will be mentored by Vlada Limic.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences – Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) launched the Mathematical Sciences for Climate Change Resilience (MS4CR) program in August 2017 with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The goal of the MS4CR program at AIMS is to increase the contribution of African mathematical scientists to finding solutions to climate change-related challenges in Africa through training, research and internships. Doctoral Student in Combinatorics

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Mathematics

We are looking for a doctoral student who will work with studies of combinatorial structures, such as directed graphs and convex polytopes, and wants to study combinatorial notions of causality. The candidate should have knowledge of and an interest in combinatorics and will be part of the combinatorics group. The position is financed by WASP program with collaboration with the mathematics department at KTH. The student will also be part of the nationwide WASP program, mathematics for AI, which will give opportunities to collaborate within their PhD-school.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
A suitable background for this position is a degree in mathematics.

Selection

In order to succeed as an docotral studentat KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed:
  • ability to independently pursue your work,
  • ability to collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on academic achievements.

Doctoral.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle studies may be employed as a doctoral student. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study. Decisions on employment as a doctoral student may not be appealed.
