Scholarly and academic misconduct in scientific writing

Maintaining the integrity and ensuring information accuracy is central in scientific writing. Corrupting scientific results, for instance, has a negative consequence of thwarting the advancement of science. Below are possible misconducts in academia that scholars should avoid:

1. Plagiarism -- as a rule of thumb, at least six matched words in a row are considered plagiarized;

2. Exclusion of authors' names that have significantly contributed to the paper;

3. Doctoring of results or intentional results modification in favor of the authors' contributions;

4. Inclusion of unrelated articles to, for instance, increase the number of citations or number of downloads of the authors' own works;

5. Misuse of position as editor or reviewer to violate good journal policies. E.g. asking authors to cite specific works of which the editor or reviewer has a conflict of interest;

6. Tempering of the editorial submission system. E.g. inserting wrong emails intentionally to prevent automated emails from reaching specific authors;

7. Failure to disclose conflict of interest;

8. Excluding critical references intentionally to falsely claim ownership of work or to hide weaknesses of your work;

9. Using of Figures or Tables from other works without acknowledgment -- relates to Plagiarism;

10. Multiple paper submission;

11. Inclusion of authors that have insignificantly contributed; and,

12. Suggesting colleagues and/or relatives to the editor to review your work.

SciWrite tip of a day: The rule of KISS in scientific writing

The essence of science is to discover new knowledge and help the community to live a better life than before. We want the general public, including us -- scholars, live "good tomorrow." Therefore, we should ensure that people receive clear and simple information to facilitate usage. When communication science, especially through writing, we should use simple language that is easily understood by people. KISS -- Keep It Simple in Science--allows quicker diffusion of knowledge to people, who we want their lives to be improved through the discovered knowledge. Communicating science with difficult language hinders the progression and advancement of science. Some scholars argued, "if you cannot make it simple, you probably may not have understood it." Any good scholar would want his/her knowledge to be used to improve the current situation.

Below are a few items to the KISS principles:

1. Avoid jargons or complex terms in areas of the manuscript that draw wide attention;

2. Avoid using language that can be interpreted by readers that you try to make yourself the best or more intelligent. Respect your readers so they can easily connect with your knowledge;

3. Ensure that you relate your work with the society and that you give the practical implications of the results; and,

4. Ensure that your work flows nicely like a beautiful story narrated to a kid.
