Emergent Scientist (Em. Sci.) is an open access journal published by EDP Sciences, and supported by the French Physics Society and the French Academy of Science. Our goal is to provide undergraduate and graduate students - and notably those who are not necessarily pursuing a career in academic research - a chance to discover peer-review publishing. We believe that by writing, reading and reviewing articles, students can understand better how scientific knowledge is produced. For senior scientists and teachers, the journal can be used as a source of teaching material or as an introduction to questions out of the reader's area of expertise.
Our aim is to provide a peer-reviewed platform from students to students. Our assessment is different from the one of a mainstream journal: we do not expect authors to demonstrate groundbreaking results, but to show exemplary scientific rigor and clarity in the way they tackle a problem and report their findings. For instance, most articles will feature a ‘dead end’ section, where unsuccessful leads are outlined. The reader would then acknowledge how failure is inherent to research.
Emergent Scientist was originally created by the organizers of the International Physicists Tournament, in order to allow the contestants to publish their experiments in a peer-reviewed journal. The Physics section has now two volumes, and we are just starting the Mathematics section. In this section, we emphasize the clarity of the exposition; the novelty of the results - although highly appreciated - is not mandatory. In particular, we accept as submissions shortened versions of bachelor and master theses (respecting the journal's sectioning). We think that submitting in Emergent Scientist gives students an opportunity to become aware of the peer-review process, that is usually not met before PhD level. You can read more about the format of the manuscript as well as the instructions for authors here. Feel free to advertise the Mathematics section of the journal to your students and colleagues!
