Math trauma
No subject terrorizes more students than math. A major reason for this is how we teach it. There's the intense memorization of hieroglyphic formulas, the ticking clock of the math test, and the do-or-die nature of a problem's one correct answer. To a child's mind it's as stressful as disarming a bomb — but with the far more dire outcome of a bad test score.

"Approximately one-third of Ph.D. students are at risk of having or developing a common psychiatric disorder like depression, a recent study reports. Although these results come from a small sample—3659 students at universities in Flanders, Belgium, 90% of whom were studying the sciences and social sciences—they are nonetheless an important addition to the growing literature about the prevalence of mental health issues in academia."
