Public engagement with science is a hot topic in science circles and researchers are increasingly expected to make their work publicly visible and accessible. At the same time, the public communication of science is growing as a field of study and research.

As host of the South African (DST/NRF) Research Chair in Science Communication, Stellenbosch University is taking the lead in pioneering and advancing this field in South Africa and on the African continent.

Graduates from natural and social sciences may qualify for our Master’s degree in Science and Technology Studies (STS) has a focus on public science communication and engagement. Our course content is in line with global trends and best practice, but is rooted in the African context.

The modular structure of the course makes it ideal for part-time study and requires students to be in Stellenbosch for a maximum of four to six weeks spread over two years. Students complete eight modules of course work and a research assignment. These are synchronized with the research priorities of the South African Research Chair in Science communication.

The closing date to apply for our next intake (starting January 2020) is 31 August 2019 for applicants who are not South African citizens and 30 September 2019 for South African citizens.
