If you ever assumed that the oldest university in the world is in Europe, Asia or America, then you're wrong because it’s not.

The oldest existing, and continually operating educational institution in the world is the University of Karueein, founded in 859 AD in Fez, Morocco. The University of Bologna, Italy, was founded in 1088 and is the oldest one in Europe.

According to this source, although here given a different name - Al-Qarawiyyin, instead of Karueein, the university was founded by "a young princess from Tunisia, Fatima al-Fihri.

The university has been recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest existing, continuously operating university, as well as, the first institution to issue educational degrees.

It is located in the city of Fes, which was once a leading spiritual and educational centre of the Muslim world."
