Who we are…
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and Applications (Sensor CDT) brings together the world leading expertise and research infrastructure of around 80 academics and researchers from the Departments of Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Materials and Clinical Medicine to form a virtual “Sensors Department.”

Sensor technology underpins almost every aspect of modern life, and scientific advances in most fields are unthinkable without sophisticated sensor technology. As sensor innovation happens at the interfaces between traditional disciplines, the Sensor CDT training programme bridges the “discipline gaps” between physical and life sciences, engineering and computer science. We provide our students with the “common language” and skills necessary to become future industrial or academic leaders in cutting-edge sensor development, intelligent data interpretation and ground-breaking sensor applications.
What we offer…
We offer a 4-year programme consisting of a 1-year MRes followed by a 3-year PhD. The MRes introduces our students to the fundamentals of sensor technologies, data interpretation and state-of-the-art sensor applications. It enables them to develop their own interdisciplinary PhD project, which is supervised by academics from two different departments, and often in collaboration with industry.
All PhD projects are interdisciplinary with supervisors typically from two different departments. By combining skills and knowledge from different areas of science and technology our PhD students work at the forefront of sensor research. Thinking across traditional subject boundaries enables them to become future leaders in this exciting field.
Who we are looking for…
We welcome applications from exceptional graduates with a 1st or upper 2nd class honours degree (or equivalent) in physical sciences, life sciences, medicine, engineering, or computer science. You should possess an innovative approach to problem solving, well-developed technical skills, and the aptitude and aspiration to become a future world leader in the field of sensor technologies and applications.
Fully funded studentships are available for UK and eligible EU students only. Self-funded international students are welcome to apply.
