There are many Linux-based distributions, and most of the users of these Linux distributions are people who find themselves using a particular distribution for one or another reason. This may be because they have heard from friends in the college/school, read a Linux book for that particular distribution or received a Linux distribution in a CD or DVD which came together with a Linux magazine they bought or may be through their curiosity to try new things!

Ubuntu Linux is arguably the most exciting Linux distribution nowadays. Ubuntu has direct roots in one of the oldest and well-known Linux distributions available, the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.

Ubuntu Linux was initially created and supported by Canonical Ltd., whose members started out as Debian fans because they wanted a faster-moving, powerful, scalable, more up-to-date and exciting distribution than Debian provided. So, in the spirit of the open source movement/Linux and free software, they made Ubuntu Linux distribution, by incorporating the best of Debian, various Linux distributions, open source applications, and by adding their own creativity.

Ubuntu was founded and propelled under Canonical Ltd. by a South African entrepreneur and space tourist, Mark Richard Shuttleworth (born 18 September 1973). Ubuntu means humanity to others in "Zulu", named after the South African philosophy of "humanity towards others". The name has implied social-economic and business committment to all users everywhere.

Ubuntu releases occur regularly for at least every six months, and there are short and long term supported releases. Ubuntu packages are updated instantly, where old versions are upgraded or deprecated and replaced by new ones.

In a nutshell, Ubuntu Linux distribution is for people who need a solid software foundation and want to control their own computing. Ubuntu Linux comes with gazilion of respectable open source applications which can be used variably and flexibly. These applications range from those used for writing a code, framing scientific documents, public presentations, surfing on the web, sending and receiving electronic mail, visual communications, chatting over social networks, working with digital photographs, manipulating videos, watching DVDs/CDs/VCDs, listening to music, or whatever you want to do. Ubuntu Linux has become a preference over other operating systems and widely used in educational, industrial and commercial interprise settings from running servers and network services to serious computing. Ubuntu offers the software that meets your needs!

Like any other Linux distributions, you can freely download and install Ubuntu, or use Ubuntu CD to run it on your current computer without altering anything. With advancement and technological revolution, you can install Ubuntu from USB stick, run it as LiveCD or persistent image. You can however decide to run Ubuntu as a sole operating system or as dual. You can for example install Ubuntu inside windows through wubi methods.

Ubuntu Linux is friendly, community-oriented software designed for users; inherently stable, powerful, secure, virus and spyware free, fast, light-weight distribution, flexible, dynamic and frequently updated. Furthermore, it is easily obtained, easy to use, easy to maintain and has easy administrative tools.

Ubuntu Philosophy and its community are the two distinguishable features which make it different from any other distributions. Folks who maintain Ubuntu, and the Ubuntu users in general, make a team of enthusiasts, seriously dedicated and always ready to help community. Following its philosophy, Ubuntu operating system like other open sources is free to use, free to distribute, free to modify and free to do whatever you want to with it!
