Mobile Application development – What you need to know

When it comes to mobile application development, a client may have three options to choose how his/her mobile application has to be developed. Exact type of mobile app depends on the approach, techniques and technologies used. Most clients and mobile technology newbies, usually do not have these ideas in mind when deciding which type of mobile app is needed for a particular business. But, developers always don't forget this, because the type of mobile app affects the whole project work flow in terms of resources, including, but not limited to, time, skills and tools. These in turn determine the whole project cost.

Mobile apps can be developed in three main options as analysed below.

1. Native mobile applications

These are the most costly mobile apps, they are developed for specific operating systems and distributed to apps store like Google Play Store and Apple Store for deployment. These apps are developed in specific computer languages, such as Java and Swift and are OS specific, meaning that they are built for a particular operating system. These type of apps have capabilities to utilize full features of the operating system software and devices hardware resources as well. These apps are good in performance but costly in development.

2. Mobile web applications

These apps are not developed for specific operating systems, like iOS or Android, and are not installed in devices like native apps from apps stores. You only need web browsers to load them, they are not much different from websites, but developed to look like native apps in user interface (front-end) for some functionalities. They may miss native system features like push notifications, gestures, and so on. Their development cost is determined by project scope, complexity and size.

3. Hybrid mobile applications

Hybrid mobile apps lie between native and web mobile apps, they have both features and some functionalities from both native and web apps. Hybrid apps are good way to converting websites, especially, responsive ones into mobile apps format. Hybrid mobile apps can be published on the app stores just like native mobile apps, with built in features in both native and web formats. Hybrid apps can be suited to utilize local system resources like native apps, to run with increased speed and performance.

Generally speaking, project cost varies according to the type of an app, development approach and technologies used. The exact cost is calculable when the specific project is decided. However, before anything is done, the first thing a developer must do is to take a look at the website itself, examine how complex it is, how large is the database, and how much content from the website is supposed to be mapped into an app, while taking care scalability. Examination goes further to find out how the website is developed, i.e., does it use CMS? Is it developed from scratch? Is it Google/WordPress blog? All these are important and need to be considered.
