FV is the easy to use graphical program for viewing and editing any FITS format image or table. FV is built and distributed as a standard component of the large HEASOFT package of programs for manipulating and analyzing FITS data files. Versions of fv are available for Linux and Mac OS X, and an older version is still available for Windows PCs . In each case the distribution is completely self-contained and includes several sample FITS files that can be used to explore fv's capabilities.

To install fv on Ubuntu Linux system:

- Down load the appropriate tar file to your distribution from http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/softw ... nload.html. The current fv tar file is "fv5.4_pc_linux64.tar.gz" for 64-bits Ubuntu Linux.
- Using the tar file above as an example, open the Terminal, move to the directory where the download is and then
  1. gunzip -c fv5.4_pc_linux64.tar.gz | tar xf -  #Unpack the gzipped file. The general rule is  "gunzip -c fv5.4_<ARCH>.tar.gz | tar xf -", where <ARCH> depends on the downloaded file
  2. cd fv5.4/ #Move to the extracted directory
  3. ./fv   #Launch and run fv
