Xournal is an application for notetaking, sketching, keeping a journal using a stylus and more. Xournal is a free software (GNU GPL) and runs on almost all recent Linux distributions and other GTK+/Gnome platforms.

To install the latest version of Xournal (currently 0.4.8) for Ubuntu releases 14.04, 13.10, 12.04, go to the Terminal and type

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
  2. sudo apt-get update
  3. sudo apt-get install xournal

To install Xournal (current version, 1:0.4.8-1) for Ubuntu Linux 16.04, type

  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. sudo apt-get install xournal

Xournal has been abandoned and there is a new release of Xournal called Xournal++. A stable latest version can be installed on Ubuntu and its derivatives as follows via the following unofficial PPA:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:apandada1/xournalpp-stable
  2. sudo apt update
  3. sudo apt install xournalpp

Unstable PPA

An unstable, nightly release is available for Ubuntu-based distributions via the following PPA:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:andreasbutti/xournalpp-master
  2. sudo apt update
  3. sudo apt install xournalpp
