Applications for the 2015-2016 academic year commencing in August 2015 are now open.

AIMS South Africa is a unique postgraduate educational centre recruiting students from the whole of Africa and preparing them for careers based in mathematical science. AIMS South Africa is an international partnership between the three universities in the Western Cape (University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and University of the Western Cape), Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom and the University of Paris-Sud (Orsay) in France.

AIMS South Africa needs a dedicated group of advanced students and academics as tutors for its academic year, to assist in its exciting teaching programme. Students coming to AIMS South Africa have strong backgrounds in the Mathematical Sciences (including pure and applied mathematics, physics, computer science, mathematical biology and other fields). Outstanding lecturers are recruited from all over the world to teach in two one-year Master's courses preparing students for advanced postgraduate research. The AIMS Master's in Mathematical Sciences courses are unusually broad in scope and employ the latest pedagogical method in order to stimulate critical and creative thinking. Student participation in class and independent work are strongly encouraged. The unique residential character of the Institute allows close interaction between students, tutors and lecturers in a congenial environment at all hours. AIMS South Africa facilities include an excellent library and a state of the art computer laboratory.

DUTIES

Providing general assistance to the academic director and the lecturers with the academic programme, for example in assisting with problem-solving classes and computer labs; in providing group and personal tutorials where needed; in assessing student performance on a continuous basis; in preparing traditional materials and examples as needed. Furthermore it is expected that tutors will continue an active interest in their research.

REQUIREMENTS

At least a research Master's in one of the mathematical sciences; strong teaching ability/skills; excellent interpersonal skills; innovative flair; excellent command of English; ability to work as a dedicated member of a team where responsibility is shared. Additional recommendation: knowledge of any of French, Arabic, Linux, SAGE, or SciPy.
