Postdoctoral in Discrete Geometry and Image Computing at Univ. Paris-Est

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position, based at Gaspard-Monge Laboratory of Informatics (LIGM http://ligm.u-pem.fr) and Laboratory of Analysis and Applied Mathematics (LAMA http://umr-math.univ-mlv.fr/) of Paris-Est University, starting in 2018. The project is supported by Labex Bézout program (http://bezout.univ-paris-est.fr/), in collaboration with Laboratory of Informatics in Images and Information Systems (LIRIS https://liris.cnrs.fr/) in Lyon.

The project investigates geometric and topological problems of digital objects (composed of pixels/voxels) under geometric transformations in a discrete space, and aims to develop a purely discrete framework that allows such geometric manipulation of digital objects without geometric and topological conflict.

For further details about the project, please see : http://bezout.univ-paris-est.fr/en/news ... -2877.html

Applicants should have (or expect to receive) a PhD in mathematics or computer science with knowledges and/or interests of the related fields, such as digital geometry, discrete geometry, computational geometry, digital image processing, computer algebra, etc. Programming skills (C/C++, Java, Maple, Mathematica etc.) are fundamental.

Applications must include a CV, a list of publications, a summary of research achievements and a future plan of research with possible links to the project, with contact details of at least two references who can provide recommendation letters upon request.

Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled.

PhD research Studentship in Nuclear Materials – University of Huddersfield: Modelling the Radiolytic Corrosion of Nuclear Fuel

Nuclear energy plays an important role in providing clean sustainable energy, mitigating the risk of climate change. Despite safety concerns, growing consensus sees the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel in deep-underground repositories.

Dissociation of water, caused by nuclear radiation, occurs when groundwater interacts with nuclear fuel. This produces reactive oxygen species that cause oxidation of the fuel, and the release of soluble species and radionuclides into the environment, posing a threat to the ecosystem.

The project’s vision seeks the development of models for the radiolytic corrosion of spent fuel using computer modelling, to reliably describe and predict the structure and reactivity of actinide materials in contact with water. This will therefore improve our ability to predict the long-term behaviour of spent fuel.

Funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Training Partnership with the University of Huddersfield. Fully funded PhD including tax-free stipend starting from £14,777 for the duration of 3 years. All tuition fees paid for the 3 year period.

Deadline for application: 30 June 2018

Start Date: October 2018

Project 1 – Link: https://research.hud.ac.uk/research-deg ... lsscience/
If you wish to discuss any details of the project, please contact Dr Marco Molinari – m.molinari@hud.ac.uk

Application Details

Completed applications, including all relevant documents requested above should be submitted via-email to materials.studentships@hud.ac.uk

1) Complete the Studentship Application Form

2) Provide a current detailed CV, identifying any research employment or experience and, where applicable, details of research conference presentations or publications.

PhD scholarship in Theoretical Physics (Condensed Matter Theory) - Designing ultrafast magnetic-logic elements from molecular substances

The goal of the project, which lies in the field of ultrafast molecular magnetism, is to design novel classical and/or quantum logic elements with realistic molecular magnets. More specifically, using quantum chemistry methods and optical control theory it will address the functionalization of novel cooperative effects stemming from the synergy of a few magnetic centers in a quest to build logical quantum gates. Given the advent of quantum computers, as advocated by some of the world’s top computer companies, the project is expected to be of growing theoretical and technological importance.

The doctoral student will be awarded a scholarship, which roughly amounts to the standard doctoral position, as prescribed by the guidelines of the German Science Foundation.

The successful candidate should hold a Master’s degree in Physics or a related field, awarded by an Institution officially recognized by the German State. The successful candidate is also expected to have a strong background in theoretical physics, in particular the physics of strongly correlated electrons and some expertise in computational ab-initio methods (quantum chemistry or density functional theory). This position is open to candidates of all nationalities. Women, disabled persons and applicants with children are encouraged to apply.

Standard application material should be sent (in electronic form) to huebner@physik.uni-kl.de (Prof. W. Huebner) or to lefkidis@physik.uni-kl.de (PD Dr. G. Lefkidis). Applications submitted before 28 February 2018 will be given full consideration.
