PhD Studentship: Bayesian Deep Learning for Alzheimer's conversion prediction in Mild Cognitive Impairment subjects

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional state between normal ageing and dementia. In a number of cases, MCI carries the risk of conversion to Alzheimer?s disease-related dementia. MCI typically includes slowing of motor performance and information processing, impaired attention and impaired executive functions with partial preservation of memory. Machine learning techniques have recently been identified as promising tools in neuroimaging data analysis and can, to a certain extent, work on a single patient basis in predicting conversion from MCI to Alzheimer?s disease (AD). This PhD will investigate novel convolutional and Bayesian deep learning techniques to identify biomarkers of MCI and improve the accuracy of detecting early signs of the potential for MCI to progress into AD. Early AD diagnosis is important for giving access to treatments that can improve symptoms and slow down the progress of the disease.

The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr Luca Citi and Dr Alba Garcia and will be part of the Essex BCI and Neural Engineering Lab (http://essexbcis.uk): today the UK?s largest research group in brain-computer interfaces.

Deadline: Friday 23 February 2018

The Master 2 Applied Mathematics CEPS: C for Scientific Calculus, E for PDE, P for Probabilities and S for Statistics

Goals: This is a generalist and flexible (modular) training in applied mathematics, which encourages the decompartmentalization between deterministic and random aspects on the one hand and theory, numerical methods and applications on the other hand. Thanks to many optional courses, the students will be able to choose choose a strong dominant either theoretical, numerical, deterministic or random.

Career opportunities: This training offers a wide range of opportunities, from PhDs in basic or applied research to mathematical engineering.

Annual theme: To give some coherence to the training, and facilitate the professional integration of the students interested by career opportunities in the industry, the courses of the second semester will be organized around an annual topic : in 2018-2019 "mathematics of the energy". In this context, the industrial companies or applied research institutes located around Marseille will be key partners of our Master 2. Students will be pout in relation with them (who will participate in some of the applied courses), and they will offer internships for interested students.
Although the specialized courses will be geared towards energy-related examples and applications, the training is nonetheless generalist enough to address students interested in more fundamental research topics or related to other applications than energy.

Scholarships: The Labex Archimède propose M2 scholarships (deadline for application: March the 15th).

Web: For detailed information, you can refer to the webpage in french (soon in english here).

PhD Positions at the Center for Interdisciplinary Mathematics, Uppsala University

The Center for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (CIM) at Uppsala University conducts interdisciplinary research between the mathematical sciences and other areas of science and industry. CIM offers training and expertise in mathematical modeling and computer simulation, see http://www.math.uu.se/cim. We are now looking for up to three PhD students to work within the center. These PhD students will join CIM's graduate school in interdisciplinary mathematics, which started in 2011.

Eligibility: The candidates are expected to have an interest in applied mathematics and/or using models in an interdisciplinary context. A PhD student position requires a Master of Science in a field that is relevant for conducting research in applied mathematics, e.g., mathematics, engineering physics or scientific computing. Candidates with a background in another area of science, e.g. chemistry or biology, with a strong competence and interest in mathematical modeling are also encouraged to apply.

Application: The application should include a short description of research interests. The application should also include Curriculum Vitae (CV), copies of diplomas and certificates, a copy of master´s degree dissertation. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). The successful candidates may start between June to September 2018 or according to mutual agreement.

Last application date: 2018-03-15

PhD in a Marie Sklodowska-Curie project - Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN: INSIGHTS, Data Science, CERN

The EU-funded Horizon 2020 programme has two main strategic objectives: to strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry and to encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research that supports EU policies.

INSIGHTS is a 4-year Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks project for the career development of 12 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) at 10 partner institutions across Europe. One of the INSIGHTS research projects will be carried out at CERN full-time. INSIGHTS is focused on applying latest advances in statistics and in particular, machine learning to particle physics. PhD position at Paderborn University, Germany - computational photophysics of conjugated polymers

A fully funded PhD student position in Computational and Theoretical Physics is available in the group of Prof. Stefan Schumacher at Paderborn University in Germany. The position (pay scale 13 TV-L / Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, 75% of regular working time) is limited to the duration of the PhD project, usually to a period of 3 years (according to the German law Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

Project description and responsibilities: We seek to hire a motivated and creative PhD student to work on the project „Microscopic picture of charge generation in conjugated polymers“ funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). In this project we aim at a better microscopic understanding and at improving molecular doping of conjugated polymers (organic semiconductors) and of charge separation after photoexcitation of these systems (based on non-adiabatic ab-initio molecular dynamics). The project builds upon the group’s previous work on these and related subjects in molecular photophysics (e.g., [1-3]). Our theoretical work will be performed in collaboration with our experimental partners. Besides the group’s interdisciplinary research (http://www.physik.upb.de/schumacher), in the Faculty of Science we offer a very stimulating research environment with a research focus on optoelectronics and material science.

We welcome applications from motivated and skilled candidates with interest in theoretical work and with good command of the English (or German) language (both written and spoken). Duties may also include contributions to the teaching in the Physics Department.

Employment requirements: Master’s degree in physics, chemistry or related subject. Experience with conjugated molecular systems and numerical simulations (in particular quantum chemistry codes) will be an advantage.

Please send applications AS A SINGLE PDF FILE in German or English to Prof. Schumacher at stefan.schumacher@upb.de. Applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis until the position is filled.
