The Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) is an interdisciplinary and globally distributed AI research institute. We are currently soliciting applications for a research intern, with appointment to begin on May 15th, 2023 - September 15th 2023.

Location: South Africa, with supervisors in South Africa, Canada and the US.
Job Description
The research associate will work on interdisciplinary research challenges that lie at the intersection of development economics and statistical machine learning. Research activities will be supervised by Raesetje Sefala, Nyalleng Moorosi and Timnit Gebru, and include:
Required Skills
Qualified candidates should have an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computational Social Science, Statistics, or a related field. Strong technical, analytic, and computational skills are essential: all projects involve the analysis of large, complex data, and require proficiency in one or more object-oriented programming languages (at least Python). Experience working with GIS-based datasets such as satellite images and other geo-referenced datasets, together with applied machine learning or econometrics are desired.
Compensation: USD 5000.00/month. This is a fixed term, contract position and is not benefits eligible.

- Data Cleaning, storing and visualisation.
- Construction of preliminary machine learning models.
- Providing preliminary interpretation of the data.
- Assisting in drafting and developing any manuscripts that are developed during their tenure with DAIR.
- Presenting results and ongoing work to DAIR members and other ML and non-ML audiences.
